How to Spot Hail Damage on Your Dallas Roof (From the Ground and Up Close)
October 12, 2026 · 6 min read
Dallas averages multiple significant hail events every spring. Not every storm damages every roof — but hail 1 inch (quarter-size) or larger absolutely can, and the damage is rarely obvious from the ground. Here is how to assess your roof safely after a storm.
Start at ground level
Walk your property and look for the collateral signs: dents in gutters, downspouts, and metal roof vents; splatter marks on siding and fences; damaged window screens; shredded plants. If hail dented your soft metals, it almost certainly bruised your shingles. Granules collecting in gutters and at downspout outlets after a storm are another tell.
What bruised shingles look like
On the roof itself, hail hits appear as dark spots where granules have been knocked away, exposing the black asphalt mat. Press gently on a fresh hit and it feels soft — like a bruised apple. That bruise means the mat underneath is fractured, and that shingle will shed granules, crack, and fail years early. Wind damage shows differently: creased, folded, or missing shingles, usually along ridges, edges, and corners.
The one thing not to do
Do not climb on a wet or storm-damaged roof. Every year, Dallas homeowners are seriously hurt checking their own roofs after storms. A professional inspection is free, takes under an hour, and produces the photo documentation your insurance company will want anyway.
Know your deadlines
Most Texas homeowner policies require hail claims within one year of the storm — some carriers are moving to six months. If you suspect damage, get it documented now even if you are not ready to file. And remember: Texas law prohibits roofers from waiving your deductible. Any contractor offering a "free roof" is asking you to commit insurance fraud.
